Choosing the Right Portable Gas Generator
Posted on July 7th, 2017
Are you preparing to buy a portable gas generator? This is a great choice! First, though, it’s important to know what you’re getting into. Here is our mini-guide to choosing the right type of portable gas generator for your home!
Medium portable gas generators are about 3,000-5,000 watts, usually. This size of generator can power multiple appliances – including, for instance, your fridge and sump pump – at the same time. This size does work well for many homeowners, provided that you are not hoping to power several appliances at once.
A large generator is a great pick. These are typically about 6,000-9,000 watts. If you want to power several appliances at once, getting a large generator is probably preferable. You can string extension cords to your generator, or you can use manual transfer switches that can restore your electrical power (typically up to 10 circuits in your main electrical panel). A large portable gas generator can thus power multiple rooms in your home.
Do you want or need some serious strength and power? If so, an extra-large generator is the way to go! These are usually about 10,000 watts or more.
A generator with an automatic switch will turn your generator on automatically, when there is a power outage. Which means you don’t even need to be home for this type of generator to function!
On the other hand, there’s a manual switch generator. These types of generators do require someone to turn them on, in the event of an outage.
