What is the average lifespan of a home’s electrical wiring?
Both NACHI and NAHB charts agree that copper wiring can last 100 years or more. But the real life expectancy of your wiring is not in the copper; it’s dependent on the wiring’s insulation, and that lifetime can vary widely depending on electrical installation. For instance, the ancient knob-and-tube form of wiring might be only 70 years old, but experts recommend it should be replaced if the insulation has become brittle. Likewise, the wiring that succeeded knob-and-tube, two wires bundled in rubber and fabric, has also turned brittle, and you might see problems with it in homes built before 1960. That kind of insulation was replaced by an early version of thermoplastic insulation. The modern formula for thermoplastic NM-B type wiring dates from 1984, when the insulation’s heat resistance was increased; the best guess is that it will provide over 100 years of service, but it’s a little early to tell.
Electrical Installation Cost
If your home is more than 40 years old, its electrical wiring probably needs an upgrade. The standard for power in an ordinary household is around 60 amps. Modern homes, however, often need 200 amps to run air conditioning equipment, computers, high-definition televisions, and other appliances. Without the proper wiring, none of these things will work properly. They may even short out your whole system. If left for too long, a short in your electrical wiring can be costly.
Our experienced electrical technicians can install new wiring throughout your entire home. Before any work begins, we’ll write up a complete quote for our services. This quote will factor in the size of your home, the wiring requested, labor, additional outlets or switches, and any demolition necessary to run new wire. We price our services affordably; we want you to receive the best possible deal on your electrical installation.
